Peter Baker
Chief Executive Officer
Peter Baker was appointed Chief Executive Officer of GM3 in May 2025.
With more than 30 years’ experience in the mining industry, Peter has held senior leadership roles across large-scale, complex operations in both Australia and internationally.
Peter previously served as Vice President of Operations at Illawarra Metallurgical Coal, leading operations at Appin Mine and Dendrobium Mine.
Prior to that, Peter was Vice President of Operations at Compass Mineral’s Goderich Mine in Ontario, Canada, where he was responsible for the day-today leadership of the world’s largest underground salt mine.
Peter has also held senior roles at Peabody Energy, Xstrata Coal and NSW Mines Rescue Service, overseeing significant safety and cultural transformations.
Having spent many years leading crews underground, Peter brings a vast wealth of experience across a diverse range of mining functions, including functional production, health, safety and environment.
Peter holds a Master of Business and Technology from the University of New South Wales, and a Bachelor of Engineering in mining engineering from the University of Wollongong, Australia.
Brenton Kuss
Chief Financial Officer
As Chief Financial Officer, Brenton Kuss is responsible for Finance, Accounting, Tax, Treasury, IT, Procurement, and Risk and plays a key leadership role in strategy execution and business performance.
Brenton is an accomplished finance executive with a global career spanning over twenty years across Australia, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the United States, and sub-Saharan Africa. His expertise covers financial strategy, corporate finance, treasury, M&A, financial reporting, governance, and operational leadership in both listed and private companies.
Brenton has held senior leadership roles in complex, capital-intensive industries primarily in the mining, energy, and construction industries.
Brenton is a Chartered Accountant and holds an MBA from SDA Bocconi.
Simon Thomas
General Manager, Dendrobium Mine
An experienced leader with a strong background in operational leadership and maintenance management, Simon Thomas is the General Manager of Dendrobium Mine. Appointed as the General Manager in 2021, Simon has a deep connection to the Illawarra operations commencing work as a vacation student and progressing through several key roles at both Dendrobium and Appin Mines over his career with both BHP and South32 ownership.
He has developed his technical and leadership skills in roles such as Shift Maintenance Supervisor, Longwall Mechanical Coordinator, Longwall Superintendent, and Production Manager. These roles provided him with extensive experience across all aspects of the mine’s operations, providing Simon with the platform to lead and influence the ongoing success and performance of Dendrobium Mine.
Simon holds a Bachelor of Engineering – Mechanical (Hons) and a Master of Business Administration (Executive) from University of Wollongong.
Andy Hyslop
General Manager, Appin Mine
Bringing extensive underground coal mine management experience, supported by a focus on ensuring optimal productivity and safety standards, Andy Hyslop is General Manager of Appin Mine.
Across several decades in leadership roles with Peabody Energy, Glencore and Centennial Coal, Andy is well regarded for his technical expertise and leadership experience. In addition to his operational focus, Andy also has proven expertise in regulatory approvals, supply chain optimisation, business improvement and strategy development and implementation. This combined experience enables Andy to bring forward-thinking leadership to deliver sustainable growth and competitive advantage across the Appin operation.
Andy has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Wollongong and a NSW Mine Manager Certificate of Competency.
David Richards
General Manager, Port Kembla Coal Terminal
A highly experienced leader in asset-intensive industries, David Richards is the General Manager of Port Kembla Coal Terminal (PKCT), bringing over two decades of expertise in bulk export terminal operations, asset management, and business improvement.
Before joining GM3, David held senior leadership roles at South32, Sugar Terminals Limited, and Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal. Throughout his career, he has successfully led large-scale operational and asset management teams, driving efficiency, enhancing safety, and ensuring long-term sustainability. He is widely recognized for his ability to implement transformational change, develop high performing teams, and deliver critical strategic outcomes.
With a strong foundation in operations, engineering, and business development, David is dedicated to maintaining PKCT’s position as a world-class export facility.
His leadership is focused on fostering a culture of excellence, safety, and continuous improvement. David holds a Master of Business Administration, a Graduate Diploma in Maintenance Management, and a Diploma in Engineering. He is also a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
